Therapeutic Massage

Therapeutic Massage in Edmonton

Therapeutic massage is hands-on treatment aimed at what is actually bothering you: a stiff neck from desk work, a sore lower back, tension headaches, tight hips, or aches from sport, work or a long day on your feet. Every session is with a registered massage therapist (RMT), so it can be covered by most extended health plans.

How it is different from a relaxation massage

A relaxation massage is about unwinding the whole body. A therapeutic massage starts with your goal. Your RMT asks about your symptoms, checks how you move, and then focuses on the areas that need it most, using a mix of techniques such as trigger point work, myofascial release, deeper pressure on tight muscles and gentle stretching. Most people still find it very relaxing.

What we commonly help with

Your first visit

  1. Fill out a short health form when you book online.
  2. Your RMT talks with you about your symptoms and goals.
  3. A quick assessment of where it hurts and how you move.
  4. Hands-on treatment, with pressure adjusted to what feels right for you. You are always draped with a sheet.
  5. A few simple stretches or tips to help between visits.

Use your insurance

Because every treatment is with an RMT, most extended health plans cover therapeutic massage. We direct bill most insurers, including Alberta Blue Cross, Sun Life, Canada Life, Manulife and Green Shield, so you only pay the part your plan does not cover. Some plans need a doctor’s referral, so it is worth checking first.

Frequently asked questions

How long should my first appointment be?

60 minutes is a good start for most people. If you have more than one area to work on, 75 or 90 minutes gives your RMT more time.

How often should I come in?

For a new problem, every one to two weeks to start, then less often as you feel better. Your RMT will suggest a plan that fits you.

Will it hurt?

Some tight areas can feel tender, but it should never be more than you are comfortable with. Tell your RMT at any time if you want more or less pressure.

Massage therapy is not a replacement for medical care. If your pain is severe, follows an injury, or comes with numbness, weakness or fever, please see a doctor first.
