Deep tissue massage uses slow, firm pressure to work into the deeper layers of muscle and the connective tissue around them. It is a good fit if you carry a lot of tension, have stubborn knots, or have long-standing tightness that a lighter massage does not reach. Every session is with a registered massage therapist (RMT), so it can be covered by most extended health plans.
Deep tissue massage should feel strong, but not painful. Some areas may feel tender, which many people describe as a “good hurt”. Your RMT will check in with you, and you can ask for more or less pressure at any time. Pressure that makes you tense up actually makes the massage less effective.
It is normal to feel a little sore for a day or two, a bit like after a workout. Drinking water, gentle movement, and a warm bath or shower can help.
All prices include GST. Add fire cupping, silicone cupping or hot stones for $25.
Because every treatment is with an RMT, most extended health plans cover deep tissue massage. We direct bill most insurers, so you only pay the part your plan does not cover.
Deep tissue describes the pressure: slow and firm. Therapeutic massage describes the goal: treating a specific problem. Many treatments use both. If you are not sure, book therapeutic massage and tell your RMT you like firm pressure.
We recommend a prenatal massage instead, where your RMT uses safe positioning and pressure for pregnancy.
Many people come every two to four weeks to keep tension from building back up. For a specific problem, your RMT may suggest closer visits at first.
Massage therapy is not a replacement for medical care. If you have a recent injury, a blood clotting condition, or take blood thinners, please tell your RMT and check with your doctor first.
