Massage for Hip Pain in Edmonton

Hip pain can show up as a deep ache at the front of the hip or groin, soreness on the outside of the hip when you lie on that side, or tightness in the buttock that makes sitting, walking or climbing stairs uncomfortable. It is common in people who sit for long hours, runners and walkers, people who stand all day at work, and during and after pregnancy.

Common causes of hip pain

  • Tight hip flexors from long hours of sitting or driving
  • Tight or overworked glute muscles, including the piriformis deep in the buttock
  • Irritation on the outside of the hip (often called hip bursitis or gluteal tendon pain)
  • Tightness along the outer thigh and IT band
  • Lower back problems that send pain into the hip
  • Hip arthritis and general stiffness

How massage therapy can help

Hip pain has many causes, so it is worth getting a diagnosis from your doctor or physiotherapist. When tight muscles are part of the problem, massage therapy from a registered massage therapist (RMT) may help to:

  • Relax tight hip flexors, glutes and outer thigh muscles
  • Ease stiffness so the hip moves more freely
  • Reduce lower back tension that can add to hip pain
  • Make sitting, walking and sleeping more comfortable

Your RMT can also show you a few simple stretches to do at home between visits.

Frequently asked questions

How many massages will I need?

It depends on the cause and how long you have had the pain. Many people notice a difference after the first visit. Long-standing tightness usually responds best to a few sessions close together, then less often. Your RMT will suggest a plan after your first appointment.

Can massage help with hip arthritis?

Massage cannot change the joint itself, but relaxing the muscles around a stiff hip may make moving and sleeping more comfortable.

Is massage for this covered by insurance?

Yes, in most cases. All our massages are with registered massage therapists (RMTs), so most extended health plans cover them, and we direct bill most insurers. Some plans need a doctor’s referral, so check your plan first.

Massage therapy is not a replacement for medical care. If your hip pain started after a fall or injury, you cannot put weight on your leg, the hip is hot, red or swollen, you have a fever, or the pain is severe or getting worse, please see a doctor first.
