Massage for Knee Pain in Edmonton

Knee pain can be a dull ache around or behind the kneecap, tightness at the back of the knee, or soreness on the outside of the knee after running, hiking, skating or long days on your feet. Often the knee itself is not the only problem: tight muscles above and below the knee can pull on it and make it hurt.

Common causes of knee pain

  • Tight thigh muscles (quadriceps) pulling on the kneecap, often called runner’s knee
  • Tightness along the IT band on the outside of the thigh
  • Tight hamstrings and calves
  • Overuse from running, hockey, skating, cycling, kneeling or stairs
  • Knee arthritis
  • Recovery after a knee injury or surgery

How massage therapy can help

When tight muscles around the knee are part of the problem, massage therapy from a registered massage therapist (RMT) may help to:

  • Relax the quadriceps, hamstrings, IT band and calves
  • Reduce the pull on the kneecap
  • Make walking, kneeling and stairs more comfortable
  • Support your recovery alongside the exercises from your physiotherapist

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a massage after knee surgery?

Usually yes, once your surgeon or physiotherapist says it is okay. Bring any details about your surgery to your first visit. Your RMT will work gently and around the incision.

Will you massage the knee itself?

Mostly we work on the muscles above and below the knee, which is often where the problem starts. Your RMT will explain what they are doing and check in about pressure.

Is massage for this covered by insurance?

Yes, in most cases. All our massages are with registered massage therapists (RMTs), so most extended health plans cover them, and we direct bill most insurers. Some plans need a doctor’s referral, so check your plan first.

Massage therapy is not a replacement for medical care. If your knee swelled up suddenly, locks or gives way, you cannot straighten it or put weight on it, the pain followed a twist or fall, or you have calf pain and swelling, please see a doctor first.
