Massage for Plantar Fasciitis in Edmonton

Plantar fasciitis is pain on the bottom of the heel or in the arch of the foot. It is often worst with the first steps in the morning or after sitting for a while, eases a little as you move, then comes back after long periods on your feet. It is common in people who stand at work, walkers and runners, and after a change in shoes or activity.

How massage therapy can help

Tight calf muscles and a tight Achilles tendon put extra strain on the bottom of the foot. A registered massage therapist (RMT) may help to:

  • Release tight calves and the Achilles tendon
  • Ease tension in the arch and sole of the foot
  • Improve ankle movement
  • Show you simple self-massage and calf stretches to do at home

Massage works best alongside supportive footwear, regular stretching and, when needed, advice from your physiotherapist, podiatrist or doctor.

Frequently asked questions

Will it hurt?

The bottom of a sore foot can be tender. Your RMT will start gently and adjust the pressure to what feels right for you.

How often should I come in?

Many people start with a visit every week or two for a few weeks, then come in as needed. Doing your home stretches in between makes a big difference.

What can I do at home?

Gently roll the bottom of your foot over a ball or a frozen water bottle for a few minutes, and stretch your calves a few times a day. Your RMT can show you how.

Is massage for this covered by insurance?

Yes, in most cases. All our massages are with registered massage therapists (RMTs), so most extended health plans cover them, and we direct bill most insurers. Some plans need a doctor’s referral, so check your plan first.

Massage therapy is not a replacement for medical care. If your heel pain followed an injury, you felt a pop, your heel is swollen or bruised, you have numbness or tingling in the foot, or you have diabetes and foot pain, please see a doctor first.
